Street Level Photoworks proudly presents Rebels & Renegades, a captivating two-part exhibition showcasing the work of two trailblazing photographers, Jill Furmanovsky and Sheila Rock. This exhibit delves into the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk and post-punk music, capturing the styles and attitudes that defined an era.
Jill Furmanovsky, an icon of rock photography, makes a triumphant return to Glasgow with her first exhibition here since Was There Then: A Photographic Journey on Oasis at Tramway in 1997. Presented in collaboration with Rockarchive London, the exhibit offers an intimate look at Furmanovsky's unparalleled career, spanning decades of music history.
From her first portrait of Stevie Wonder in 1974 to documenting punk’s chaotic brilliance, Furmanovsky’s lens has immortalized some of the most influential figures in music. The exhibit features her iconic portraits of The Clash, Bob Marley, Blondie, Joy Division, and The Ramones, alongside vivid shots of Sid and Nancy and The Slits. Moving into the 1980s, Furmanovsky captured new wave and pop icons like Kate Bush, Boy George, Grace Jones, and Björk, as well as legends like Leonard Cohen and Iggy Pop.
Furmanovsky’s groundbreaking work has been celebrated globally. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Amateur Photography Magazine, the ICON Award at the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards 2024, and was named a So.co Legend. Her books, including The Moment and Oasis at Knebworth, are genre-defining works, and her upcoming documentary The Invisible Photographer (2025) promises to shine further light on her extraordinary archive.
This exhibition is more than a showcase of photography; it’s a celebration of the music, culture, and rebellious energy that shaped generations. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience Jill Furmanovsky’s incredible artistry in Glasgow’s cultural heart.
